Your First Hosting Account: 101

Becoming confused is normal, especially with all those companies wanting your business. The number of results shown for any given search on web hosting is truly amazing. No matter what hosting provider you visit, they all seem to be number one. Now the odds are high that you simply are an individual with a business idea, or you want to create a website for out of fun. Oh, and let me guess, you are on a budget. You should accept the fact that you do not know which company is the best for you. When it comes to finding a suitable webhost, you need to know these facts.

When it comes to our checklist of priorities, customer service is number one. Think of customer service like insurance. If you are worried about customer support, that is a good thing because most folks dont care half the time. Being a new webmaster means you will have plenty of chats with customer service. Dont forget, only sign up with a place that offers 24 hour service. Also, grab any kind of learning material you can and apply it to your website.

Dont fall asleep on me just yet, you need to learn about important features. If you are new to hosting a site, this may not apply to you. Alright, you may know what I am talking about, but if not, prepare yourself. I am talking about the amount of space on your web servers hard drive for files. All of those files you want to upload to your website need room on the server, that is known as disk space. Websites that upload a lot of video are going to run out of disk space the fastest.

How bad you do want to show your website to everyone in the world? Every website owner wants their digital real estate to become popular but there is no way that is possible without having something. Alright, Ill explain what I mean. Im blabbering on about bandwidth if it hasnt been obvious. Some people feel that you need unlimited bandwidth while others simply state a small enough is plentiful. Do you know what the recommended levels of bandwidth should be for your website? The website you create will probably never reach your bandwidth limit. If your site has visitors, you use bandwidth. Pictures, video, games, and anything like that will take away your bandwidth more than static text-based pages. Is the bandwidth issue going to be a problem for my site? Not in the least.

Did you know that an OS controls the performance of your hosting plan? Whether you like it or not, you have a very small selection of operating systems to choose from for your websites server. I did forget to mention however, some offers from companies dont offer a choice.

What is the cost of hosting your website somewhere? A normal price for 1 year of hosting comes in around $80 a year. People that sign up for 2 years or more with a hosting plan get better rates overall. Since hosting providers vary their deals, you may not see a discount offered. Not every provider is going to offer a smashing discount. Any decent hosting provider offers a deal – if you dont see one, write them off your checklist.
